Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

When the word yoga is mentioned, most people immediately think of some postures for relaxing and limbering the body. This is one aspect of yogic science, but actually only a small part and relatively recent in development. The physical Yoga of Hatha Yoga was primarily designed to facilitate the real practice of yoga, the understanding and complete mastery of the mind. The science of the mind is yoga.

The eight limbs of yoga are:
1. yama (abstinence)
2. niyama (observance)
3. asana (posture)
4. pranayama (breath control)
5. pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
6. dharana (concentration)
7. dhyana (meditation)
8. samadhi (contemplation, absorption or super-consciousstate)

Yama consists of non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, continence and non-greed.

Niyama consist of purity, contentment, accepting but not causing pain, study of spiritual books and worships of God (self-surrender).

By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous and disregard toward the wicked, the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness.
